Volunteer with us.
Sanjeevani Booti is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in the city of Varanasi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in India. We have need of workers both in India and in other countries.
The long-term volunteers at Sanjeevani Booti typically are students from Benares Hindu University, but people from all walks of life in Varanasi and around the world often stop by for a while, trade ideas with us, and spread news about health.
Some of the things that we always want people to do for us are as follows:
- Learn about public health issues and teach them to other people. If you have questions, ask us. It is work for us to find willing students, so if you want to be a student then save us trouble and come to us. We do not care where you live – contact us and we will give you information about health in Varanasi, India.
- Teach us things. Sanjeevani Booti is a data repository. If you have any information related to our mission to improve public health in India and beyond, then please send it to us. In particular, we are in need of lesson plans and teaching strategies from health educators.
- Call health organizations outside Varanasi and have them mail samples of pamphlets to us. We only need single copies, because we translate and reprint everything.
- Create or find flyers or short pamphlets about transmissible disease, and mail, fax, or email them to us – we always look for new ways to say the same things, and we can translate them to local languages.
- Draw illustrations – we need every style of art on file. A lot of our target audience is illiterate, so our translations only go so far. We like modern art, traditional drawings, or anything that we can mass produce. We meet all kinds of people and if it is good work, it will connect with someone and they will learn from it.
- Proofread – we need native speakers of English to proofread our work, particularly short press releases. Our staff speaks English, but not as a first language. It would be helpful to have volunteers who could look at our reports and correct them to American or British standards. If you looked at a few pages a month it would be a big help.
- Critique – we need people to critique our written reports. When we write reports we need opinions from average people as to whether we are conveying all the necessary information to raise awareness of the situation here. People who are commenting on our reports are encouraged to ask questions and suggest changes, and generally we would like to have ten people review every report we write, so this is an area where we always need volunteers.
What do you do well? How do you want to use what you can do to help public health in India? We listen to all proposals, and welcome good work of any kind. You do not have to be in Varanasi or even India to volunteer for us, but we want you to visit us if you are in the area!
Some people have asked for more specific information about what we need. Here is a page describing some of the special needs Sanjeevani Booti has as of June 2008. Current needs
