May 2008 Mendhiganj AIDS Awareness Survey
Sanjeevani Booti – May 2008 Mendhiganj AIDS Awareness Survey
On Saturday May 10, 2008, three social workers from Sanjeevani Booti staffed an HIV information table during an outdoor public celebration in the rural village of Mendhiganj in Uttar Pradhesh, India. In a location just outside the festival which was both private and easily accessible these workers also conducted an HIV-awareness survey. The survey showed that between 60-70% of the 87 surveyed villager had name awareness of HIV or AIDS, but perhaps more importantly the project recorded how villagers reacted to the novelty of being surveyed.
The ultimate conclusion of this study is that Mendiganj has a population of people who lack and would be receptive to receiving further HIV-related health education, and that the controls in surveying in North India must be different from those which are typically sufficient in Western cultures.
