Sanjeevani Booti
Sanjeevani Booti is an organization which exists to provide information about blood-borne diseases to people in North India, particularly those in the city of Varanasi (Benares). We focus on diseases which have a social stigma against them, such as those which are transmitted by sex or by using syringes outside of a medical setting. In addition to providing information, we also do community outreach, host counseling services, and create learning and teaching tools. People anywhere in the world are free to use our web services as they like.
Our organization is a repository for many other health organizations' pamphlets, flyers, factsheets, and books, but we also publish our own information to target groups who are at risk but who are unlikely to have much interest in materials published by mainstream sources. We continually seek organizations and independent parties to distribute existing information and create new teaching aids. We want more people to be teaching aides, because education is still the best prevention for the spread of disease.
Because we are based in Varanasi, India, our organization is able to do more service with less funding than many comparable health organizations in parts of the world which are differently developed than India. Our city has a population of 1.4 million people and in 2007, our organization became the first of its kind available to our people. We take a science-based approach to disease education, meaning we start by teaching people about viruses and bacteria so that they will have a better understanding of what kinds of treatments will be most effective for their situation.
